Dr. Jason Winikoff is a drummer, percussionist, singer, bandleader, ethnomusicologist, and music educator who cut his teeth playing and studying Black American Music in New Orleans. Though originally from the US, he has been an active member of various Vancouver music scenes since 2018. Winikoff is a fixture in the traditional jazz and swing dance community where he has gained notoriety for his bouncy grooves, high energy drumming, raspy vocals, and focus on the long-form New Orleans repertoire. He is also the founder of a Zambian-jazz fusion group, co-mastermind behind the annual Rocky Horror Music Show, frequently leads small jazz combos, collaborates with singer-songwriters, and performs wherever his mastery of timbre and rhythm are needed. The perpetual student, Winikoff is honored to carry on the musical lineage of his primary teachers: Kapalu Lizambo, Josephine Sombo Muzala Chipango, William Vunda, Damas “Fanfan” Louis, Geoff Clapp, Jim Markway, and Jesse McBride.
