Balkan Shmalkan
Balkan Shmalkan is East Vancouver’s beloved brass dance party orchestra, fusing global music traditions with a distinctly local flair. Rooted in the sounds of Roma and Klezmer music from Eastern Europe, their repertoire blends Balkan brass with elements of pop and jazz. Singing in five languages—including Serbian, Romani, and Italian—the band features six to twelve musicians on reed, brass, and percussion instruments from both Eastern and Western traditions.
Formed by longtime collaborators in traditional South Serbian Trubači music, Balkan Shmalkan reimagines those roots through fresh arrangements and infectious energy. Equally at home on stage or roaming through a crowd, they bring joyful, high-energy performances to dance floors across Greater Vancouver.
