Celso Machado

Celso Machado (born January 27, 1953) is a Brazilian world music guitarist, percussionist and multi-instrumentalist who lives in Gibsons, BC, Canada. For over forty years he has performed on concert stages throughout Brazil, Western Europe and Canada, as well as in the United States. He is active as a teacher, composer and recording artist. He has played onstage with a range of outstanding world renowned guitarists including:  Sergio and Odair Assad, Badi Assad, Romero Lubambo, Yamandu Costa, Cristina Azuma, Peter Finger, and Solorazaf and has been an opening act for Brazilian jazz musicians including Gilberto Gil and Bebel Gilberto.

A virtuoso Brazilian guitarist, and composer, Celso is considered one of the most versatile and exciting musicians and composers of Brazilian music around today. He is renowned as an imaginative and expressive performer of Brazilian folkloric and popular styles, interpreted with a range of his own influences – he’s especially fascinated by other world music traditions. While Celso’s music is rooted in Brazilian rhythmic and melodic styles, he finds similarities between the music of southern Italy and northeast Brazil, the Egyptian Maqsoum and the Brazilian Baião rhythm, the Moroccan Gnawa rhythm and Afoxé and Samba. Celso incorporates these variations into his own sound; his own unique contribution to the ongoing evolution of Brazilian music.
