Django’s Jewels

Artist Website

On a mission to capture the sound of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy jazz of 1930s and 40s Paris, BC’s Django’s Jewels will be performing in the Okanagan this week. Comprised of four of BC’s up-and-coming gypsy jazz musicians–Cam Boyce (violin), Aaron Loewen (acoustic guitar), Lukas Hyrman (acoustic guitar) and Juan-Pablo Gonzalez (upright bass) they represent the next generation of gypsy swing in Western Canada.

The Jewels swing hard and fast, with energy and intensity. Outfitted with traditional gypsy guitars, violin and upright bass, their lineup is a classic gypsy jazz formation, while the their guitar-driven “pompe” rhythm provides their trademark gypsy swing. They play an exciting catalogue of jazz and gypsy swing standards, spiced up with original arrangements, dynamic improvisational interplay, and a rare but well-placed vocal melody or two. Having trained with gypsy jazz masters in Montreal, France and beyond, the raw swing and vintage sound of Django’s Jewels packs a serious bite that harkens back to the roots of the gypsy jazz that came from the streets of Paris.
