The Starling Effect
The Starling Effect is a Vancouver-based indie rock band with deep musical chemistry, forged through years of collaboration. Three of its members—John Lucas (vocals, guitar), Michael Nathanson (drums), and Greg Williams (multi-instrumentalist)—have played together in past projects, including Stride Elementary and Windows ’78, creating a foundation of trust that fuels their creative process. Newcomer Alex Reed (bass) quickly found his place within the group, adding melodic depth to their evolving sound. Originally conceived as a solo project, The Starling Effect has grown into a fully collaborative band, blending elements of post-punk, shoegaze, and ’90s alternative rock into a distinctive style.
In early 2024, the band recorded two new songs at Little Red Sounds with producer Felix Fung, capturing the full range of their dynamic sound. The result is A Strange Habit of Disappearing, a bristling indie rock anthem, and Blueskiesgrey, a slow-burning dream-pop track. Released in April 2024 on Submerged Records, both singles are available on Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and other streaming platforms.
