Van Django

Artist Website

Van Django’s music is deeply rooted in the infectious rhythms and melodies of 1930s Parisian gypsy jazz, yet their sound is anything but confined to the past. With an adventurous spirit, they seamlessly blend dazzling improvisation, driving energy, and a playful sense of eclecticism. Their repertoire features original compositions and inventive arrangements—often laced with unexpected mash-ups that highlight their diverse musical influences.

Since forming in 1998, Van Django has toured extensively across Canada and taken their dynamic performances to audiences in the US, Europe, and China. The group was a regular feature at Djangofest Northwest from 2008 to 2016, sharing the stage with some of the genre’s most celebrated artists, including the John Jorgenson Quintet and legendary guitarist Romane.

Their discography includes four albums: Tiptoe TripWaltz in the Shape of a TreeHotel Europe, and a holiday release, Cool Yule, featuring an array of special guests. Their recordings have received widespread airplay on major stations such as CBC, RDI, Espace Musique, NPR, and Ireland’s Lyric FM.

Nick Lehr, former director of Djangofest Northwest, perfectly captured the essence of a Van Django performance:

“In an increasingly crowded niche, Van Django is a standout act. With a clever mix of contemporary standards, classical ditties, rock homages, and solid originals, they effortlessly whip the audience into a joyful frenzy. Attending a Van Django concert is the most fun you can have sitting down with your clothes on.”
